Spring Break 2023
Pine Ridge Cultural Immersion:
From March 12-18, 2023, students will have the opportunity to learn from and about the Lakota people at Pine Ridge Reservation through an immersion experience at the Pine Ridge Reconciliation Center. As visitors, we will be invited into a cross cultural immersion that includes programming and presentations that provide space for mutual conversations and a greater understanding of each other. The focus is on creating healthy, mutually respectful relationships. We will work together on breaking down barriers created by negative stereotypes and open the door to a deeper appreciation for each other. Each day concludes with a Talking Circle to provide a time of open, honest dialogue.
What is the Pine Ridge Reconciliation Center?
Pine Ridge Reconciliation Center is a joint Presbyterian-Lutheran ministry with the Lakota people of the Pine Ridge Reservation. The mission of the center is to foster mutual trust, respect and understanding while addressing the deep poverty that exists on the reservation. In addition to cultural immersion programs, the center also provides meals, diapers, and basic necessities to neighbors, runs a day shelter, an after school program for kids, a job corps, energy assistance matching programs, and more. Learn more about the work of PRRC here.
Immersion Program
Each day, different people from the community will share their experiences, hopes, and views of life on the reservation. Through their stories and the places they share with us, we will explore how the history of European and white European and American colonization of the land continues to impact contemporary life. There will be opportunities to learn about the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890, generational trauma and how these historical events continue to be part of our lives. Our role as visitors is to listen and learn from the Lakota people we meet. We will all be practicing the important skill of listening more and talking less.
Historical sites that we may visit include the Red Cloud Indian School, Wounded Knee, Oglala Lakota College, Lakota Fund, and Thunder Valley.
Typical Daily Schedule [specifics will vary]
Meals
The kitchen at the center has cookware and utensils for meal prep, and we are responsible for most of the meals we will be eating together. We will be purchasing most of our groceries locally, as a way to support the Pine Ridge community. We will mostly be working together to prepare crockpot meals so we can prep in the morning and come back to the center in the evening and dinner will be ready. We will be relying on easily packable lunches, because most days we will be eating the noon meal on the go. As guests of the Reconciliation Center, we are expected to gather as community for all meals.
Dates & Logistics:
We will depart New York City on the morning of March 12 and return on the afternoon of Saturday, March 18. Our plan is to fly in and out of Denver and to drive from Denver to and from Pine Ridge in a van. This van trip takes about 5 hours so please be prepared for some long (fun!) road tripping. Who wants to DJ??
Costs
We are doing everything we can to make this trip as affordable as possible for students. While the actual cost is around $800 per person, we have obtained enough grant funding and donations to lower the contribution for each student to $175. This includes airfare from NYC to Denver and back, transportation from Denver to South Dakota and back, as well as lodging and meals while we are in Pine Ridge. Please plan to bring some spending money in case we stop for meals on the road or there are opportunities to buy snacks or souvenirs from local businesses during the trip.
If the cost of the trip is prohibitive for you, please be in touch with Becca about the possibility of a scholarship.
Signing Up:
To sign up, please contact Becca. The sign up deadline is December 5 and a deposit of $50 is due at that time. We have a limit of 7 spots for students, so please don't delay in signing up as soon as you know you want to go.
Journeying together
The Vine NYC will participate in this trip together with campus ministry students from Lutheran Campus Ministry at University of Wisconsin-Stout and Journey House Campus Ministry at University of Wisconsin-River Falls. We look forward to building relationships with students from different backgrounds and perspectives than our own, as well as making new friends with some fabulous Wisconsinites.
